Democracy Wiki

Compulsory voting is an option where everyone who's eligible to vote has to participate in elections, whether or not they like any of the available candidates.

Description[]

A law that requires all citizens to vote, which may be treated with varying levels of enthusiasm when it comes to enforcement. It can be argued that we cannot have a functioning democracy unless all citizens take part in the democratic process and cast a vote, but there is also an argument that says forcing people to choose a political party is not only authoritarian, it also encourages low-effort participation by voters who may not have studied the relevant issues. Compulsory voting will result in extremely high turnout, but can be seen as illiberal.
